Calling California’s Central Valley home probably means you’ve suffered through an allergy season or two … so, what exactly is in the air here that makes us so uncomfortable? Let’s break down the Central Valley’s most common allergens.

Pollen: A Year-Round Problem
One of the biggest culprits in the Central Valley is pollen, which comes from a variety of trees, grasses and weeds. During spring and summer, pollen from oak and walnut trees can be particularly brutal. Grass pollen peaks in late spring and summer, while ragweed and sagebrush pollen can trigger allergies in the summer and fall.

Dust Mites: Our Unwelcome Visitors
Dust mites are microscopic creatures that thrive in warm, humid environments. In the Central Valley’s dry climate, your home can become a breeding ground for dust mites. They can take up residence in bedding, upholstery and carpets.

Mold Spores: Dampening Our Mood
Mold spores are another common allergen found in the Central Valley, particularly in damp or poorly ventilated areas. Indoor mold growth is common in bathrooms, basements and kitchens, while outdoor mold finds its home in decaying vegetation like compost piles. Mold allergies may worsen during the rainy season.

Airborne Irritants: Uneasy Breathing
The Central Valley’s agriculture industry contributes to the presence of airborne irritants like pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. These chemicals, along with pollutants like vehicle emissions, can make allergies and respiratory conditions worse, particularly in urban areas where there’s lots of heavy traffic.

Prevention and Management:
To minimize exposure to these common allergens in the Central Valley, you can use air purifiers, make sure your indoor spaces are properly cleaned and avoid outdoor activities during peak pollen times.

But if that’s not cutting it, Baz is here to help you breathe easier. Schedule an appointment today at one of our many Central Valley locations!
