Fall sports season is ramping back up! We all love to see our children hit the field, but for those kids who suffer from grass allergies, it can also be a challenging season. At Baz Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center, we often see young athletes struggling with allergy symptoms that can hinder their love of the game. Here’s how you can prepare your star players to manage grass allergies!

Understand the Symptoms

Grass allergies can cause a range of symptoms, including sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, coughing, wheezing and skin rashes. If your child experiences these symptoms, during or after time spent on the field, grass allergies are probably to blame.

Pre-Game Strategies

Pre-treatment can be effective in managing grass allergies. Start with an OTC antihistamine about an hour before practice or games. When used consistently, nasal sprays are another excellent option to reduce inflammation and congestion.

Protective Gear & Post-Game Showers

Outfit your child with protective gear, such as long sleeves and pants, to minimize skin contact with grass. After games or practice, have your child shower and change into clean clothes as soon as possible to wash off any lingering pollen. You can also use a saline nasal rinse to clear the nasal passages.

Environment Management

To reduce allergens in your home and car, keep windows closed during peak pollen times and use air conditioning with a HEPA filter. Regularly clean and vacuum your home and car, focusing on areas where pollen may accumulate. You can even put allergen-proof covers on bedding as an added protection. And as always, wash sports gear frequently.

Create an Action Plan

Work with your Baz Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center allergist to develop a personalized action plan. This should outline the steps to take during an allergic reaction, including medications to use and emergency contacts to call. Make sure your child, coaches and caregivers are aware of this plan and know how to execute it.

By understanding and managing grass allergies, you can help your star player stay healthy and focused on the game. Be sure to give us a call ahead of the season to ensure success both on and off the field.
