Peanut Allergies and Oral Immunotherapy

Children are diagnosed with a peanut allergies every year. Nearly 1.5% to 3% of children are affected globally. This type of allergy is becoming such a problem that schools have become “peanut-free” zones. Despite these zones, 19% of schools are reporting allergic events due to peanut exposure.

However, new research suggests that oral immunotherapy may help treat peanut allergies in children. Yet, by exposing children to controlled doses of the peanut protein, patients seem to be able to tolerate exposure without allergic reactions.

According to Wesley Burks, MD, “we would anticipate that any child with a peanut allergy could do this if the outcome is validated.”
