Allergies

Are you a dog lover with a dog-allergic family member? Here is a list of dogs to consider if your looking to adopt. Unfortunately there is no dog breed that is completely hypoallergenic, these breeds historically have proven to be good choices for allergy sufferers due to their non-shedding coats that typically produce a low amount of dander. Dander is usually associated with pet allergies in humans.

The Afgan Hound – Independent, Sweet and Silly is how the American Kennel Club describes this breed. Very energetic, a large dog that requires a lot of exercise and frequent grooming.

The Bichon Frise – A friendly and playful little dog, the Bichon has hair, not fur which requires regular brushing.

The Chinese Crested – A lively toy breed, the Chinese Crested is hairless and requires protection from the sun if outside on sunny days

The Kerry Blue Terrier – A smart, active and health breed with a long coat that requires frequent grooming

The Poodle – One of the smartest breeds that comes in four sizes; Toy, Miniature, Medium and Standard.  The poodle has a hypoallergenic coat that requires frequent brushing and grooming.

The Portuguese Water Dog – The current first dogs of the United States are Bo & Sunny, Portuguese Water dogs owned by the Obama family.  Malia Obama suffers from allergies so one reason this breed was selected, aside from their good nature, was the fact they have a hypoallergenic coat.
