Fall allergies in the Central Valley can be hiding in the beautiful golden, brown and red hues. So, while it might be tempting to jump in that big pile of leaves after an afternoon working in the yard, you might want to ensure you’re not allergic to what’s hiding in there! Take a look at the list of common suspects, and determine if your allergens are represented.

Hidden Allergens in Fall Leaves: Central Valley, California

1. Mold/Fungal Spores

When fall leaves decompose, they create the perfect environment for mold growth. Common mold types like Aspergillus and Penicillium thrive in the dampness beneath fallen leaves. Mold spores can trigger allergic reactions like sneezing, itchy eyes and even asthma, particularly in areas with lingering moisture during Central Valley’s fall season.

2. Ragweed Pollen

Ragweed continues to release pollen through fall, and these pollen grains can settle in leaf piles. Even though you might think allergy season is over, ragweed pollen remains active and can trigger hay fever symptoms, such as runny nose, itchy throat and watery eyes, especially as leaves are stirred up during yard work.

3. Dust and Debris Particles

As leaves decay, they can collect dust, dirt and other particles. These irritants can become airborne when leaves are disturbed, leading to allergic rhinitis, sneezing and coughing. The dry fall conditions in Central Valley can make dust and debris more problematic.

4. Tree Pollen Residue

While tree pollen is typically a spring allergen, residues from oak, pine or sycamore trees can linger on fallen leaves and resurface in the fall. As you rake or pile leaves, these particles can become airborne and cause allergic reactions similar to those experienced in spring.

How to Protect You and Your Family this Fall

  • Consider wearing a mask while raking or handling leaves to minimize inhalation of mold spores and pollen.
  • Avoid spending long periods near damp or decaying leaves.
  • Consider leaf removal or mulching strategies to limit allergen buildup around your home.
